Roofs & Resources, a housing and houseless forum is Saturday and more details are below. For the panel, organizers have invited the currently and formerly houseless, local service providers, community advocates, and neighbors.
There was concern from some neighbors when John Rotter, public safety chair for the Montavilla Neighborhood Association announced there was talks with the City about starting a managed houseless camp in the neighborhood. He said there’d be more information on the plan at the forum.
I reached out to Rotter and Olivia Alsept-Ellis, forum organizer, to get some clarity. Until after the board meeting, Alsept-Ellis said she hadn’t heard about the possibility of a camp for the neighborhood, but it is a topic panel members have experience with and would be open to discuss.
Managed camps can be a marvelous model, she said, but it takes a lot of planning and community building— adding that the forum isn’t about what she thinks. The forum is about assembling experts to discuss a variety of topics related to the topic.
MNA members also said Rotter’s announcement at the meeting was the first time they’d heard anything about starting a managed camp in the neighborhood, and that the board hasn’t given any official support to the project. Alsept-Ellis said board members work on a lot of different projects, so sometimes misunderstandings happen. I reached out to Rotter to learn more about the potential for a managed camp, but didn’t hear back from him. Watch the video of Rotter’s announcement here.

If you haven’t noticed, I love small businesses. It’s so cool to see people step out on their own, and make their business exactly like they want. Do you like art and drinks and punk rock and Mexican food? You’ll like Misdemeanor Meadows, and very likely the awesome folks who founded the bar.
Praise The Loud Punk Rock Sunday at Misdemeanor Meadows (event) is on. Sounds great.
